New English Translation
15 Whenever they went out to fight,[a] the Lord did them harm,[b] just as he had warned and solemnly vowed he would do.[c] They suffered greatly.[d]
16 The Lord raised up leaders[e] who delivered them from these robbers.[f] 17 But they did not obey[g] their leaders. Instead they prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped[h] them. They quickly turned aside from the path[i] their ancestors[j] had walked. Their ancestors had obeyed the Lord’s commands, but they did not.[k]
